The problems with sex-workers calling it massage

Hey there,

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in regards to the problems and issues we face when sex-workers call it massage as well. I find the topic rather interesting and would love to discuss it further with you all.

I know in the US there are laws saying that a client always have to be draped in order to avoid the association with sex-workers and to make a massage sexual. In other countries there are no such laws.

What problems have you encountered?
What rules and regulations have been put in place to avoid massage and sex-work to be mixed up?
How do we educate the clients about the difference?
What incidents have you experienced?
What do you think can be done to deal with it?
etc.

Feel free to discuss the topic and bring in your thoughts, concerns, experiences and so on.

Thanks!
Cheers!
Pia

I have a notice posted in my office and on my advertisements that states that this is a non-sexual treatment. Something like:

Massage therapy provided is intended to enhance relaxation, reduce pain caused by muscle tension, increase range of motion, improve circulation, aid in recovery from injury, promote overall health, and offer a positive therapeutic experience of touch.

Sexual innuendos, inappropriate language or behavior is unacceptable. Any treatments will end immediately should such occur, and client will be charged full price.

I find I get hit on a lot less after posting that in my office. Also, I have my clients sign a statement that they understand that information with my policy statement (also stating they need to inform me of medical conditions that might effect massage, etc.)

The notice should make it clear it's not about sex at least. Though at least here, unfortunately, we're just listed under 'massage de relaxation' in the yellow pages and the like, which could just as well be sex-work in disguise. I've had so many phone calls from guys wanting a sex massage that I am very reluctant to answer my phone if I don't have the number listed (add to that a huge amount of calls from people trying to sell me stuff, no protection from salesmen here unfortunately).

On the statement you have your clients sign. Is that a legal requirement? Or a thing you do? What is the precise purpose of it? I don't think we have any such requirements here (that I'm aware of at least, French can be hard to understand at times). I am considering if I should start having clients sign it and if so, how to word it and all that.
